SEN Guide for Parents

High quality teaching that is differentiated and personalised will meet the individual needs of the majority of children. Some children need educational provision that is additional to or different from this. Occasionally some children may need to have additional 'boosters' or interventions because they have fallen behind in their learning. Boosters may be provided by class teachers whereas intervention strategies are usually provided outside the classroom and outside normal curriculum hours. These relatively short term strategies are designed to bring children back up to expected levels.

SEN Support - School Based Plan

When a child has been identified as having a particular special need or disability that is affecting their learning, action is taken to remove barriers to learning and assessments take place to ensure that targeted, specialised educational provision is effective. The majority of children will have their needs met through personalised planning or one or more ' catch-up intervention' at this stage. This process is managed through the provision of a 'School Based Plan.'

Many of these children are likely to receive support from other agencies. ie. Educational Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist. Plans are written with parent/carers/teachers and the Inclusion Manager with agreed outcomes. The targets may be delivered in individually or through small group work and will then be monitored and reviewed at least 3 times a year.

Educational Health Care Plan

A few children with the most complex needs will require an Educational Health Care Plan. This may be requested when despite the school taking action to meet the child's special needs they have not made expected progress. This process may involve a number of outside agencies and specialist professionals to contribute evidence to support this.
